Filling our Buckets of Love
The 89th Convention for Quota International is being hosted in Brisbane and the Service-on-Site project planned for this year is Buckets of Love.
Quota International is partnering with the Combined Women’s Refuge Group to support women’s shelters for women and children victims of domestic violence. Two representatives from Combined Women’s Refuge Group will attend on Sunday morning to receive Quota’s “Buckets of Love” and tell us a little of their work.
Quota Carindale has painted their bucket, making it look extra special, thanks to a very talented niece of one of the Quotarians.
It has now been filled with light women's night wear, children's pyjamas, children's books, games and puzzles.

Build a Bear fun
Another successful holiday program for children was held yesterday at Build-A-Bear Carindale. Great to see the children having such fun filling their bear and picking out the clothes to dress the bear to take home.
This is what the children made.

Buckets of Love
Quota International has a yearly convention and is hosted world wide.
This year everyone will be heading to Australia.
At every convention a Service-on-Site project is planned and this year, Quotarians will help to provide Sound Beginnings for Children in South East Queensland. Quota International is partnering with the Combined Women’s Refuge Group to support women’s shelters for women and children victims of domestic violence. Two representatives from Combined Women’s Refuge Group will attend on Sunday morning at general session to receive Quota’s “Buckets of Love” and tell us a little of their work.
These buckets have been filled with items such as light women's night wear, children's pyjamas, children's books, games and puzzles. Quota Carindale felt they would make their bucket a little bit extra special by hand painting it.
Let’s all help to make our “Buckets of Love” a project that will empower women and children at a time in their lives when support is needed most.

Wow a big thanks
The invite just went out yesterday and 4 people responded. Zena had her studio set up and each person was shown how to make a card. One of the ladies had never made a card in her life before and she only took a few minutes to master it and looked like she had been crafting for years.
We even had beautiful hand made envelopes, donated by one of our Paper Angel friends. Thanks Liz Collett they looked beautiful.
Zena had set up 3 stations, each station had a different card. The ladies made a few each of the cards at each station and then moved to the next one.

We had an absolutely fun, productive day, all up 72 cards made, envelopes matched and packed in cello bags ready to go.
A very, very big thank you to all that came to help. This is only the first of many, so if you are keen to help, please contact Zena so she can organise the next free card making day.

Making cards for charity
During our charity event last weekend one of the ladies at Zena's table suggested that we should get together and make cards for the North Queensland Rural Family Support Services, as this was possibly another way we could help.
We want to run with this idea and Zena has offered her studio to run these card making sessions. She has a few days and evenings planned. If you are keen to make some cards, then get in touch with her. You don't have to be creative, as you will be guided every step of the way. Come join us!!

Paper Angels are truly Angels
We are very fortunate to come across this wonderful group of women who call themselves the Paper Angels. They are Stampin' Up! demonstrators and part of their mission statement is "...To make a Difference" They certainly do that for us year after year. This year was no exception.
Last Monday we spent the day enjoying the company and creativity of 40 ladies, creating cards and forming new friendships. With all proceeds going to North Queensland Rural Family Support Services.
Thank you Jan Potter (bottom left) from Quota International Nundah/Clayfield for supporting us.
The home office of Stampin' Up! are very generous. For each of our charity events with The Paper Angels they have donated wonderful raffle prizes.
The day went from 10am to 4pm. Lunch was included and prepared by Gemma, who just happens to be Rebecca's sister, it was delicious and was only over shadowed by the afternoon tea which was soooo yummy.
For this event, once again we made a substantial amount of money from the raffle. All Funds raised by Quota Carindale go directly to Jeanie from North Queensland Rural Family Support Services who purchases her requirements from businesses within her area and in this way support is given to local communities as well as people on the land.

North Queensland Rural Family Support Services event
Once again Quota Carindale’s fund raising was supported by a Paper Angels Charity Cardmaking Day. What a successful event this was.
The beneficiary of this event is North Queensland Rural Family Support Services who operate out of Charters Towers and service the Charters Towers Regional Council’s Rural/Remote Region, Flinders, Richmond & McKinlay Shire Council areas. Their Co-ordinator Jeanie Brooks has been working with families on the land for more than 30 years. Two Quota Carindale members, Janette and Lyn were able to meet with Jeanie on their travels through North West Queensland in 2015. They had discussions with Jeanie and felt the work she was doing fitted well with Quota’s ideals of supporting disadvantaged women and children and because of the severity of the drought in this region their need was dire. Here, the family focus is on survival with the resulting neglect of both mental and physical health. Children are taken out of boarding school and socialising becomes infrequent as fuel is only available for necessities.
On 26 August 2016, North QLD Rural Services will be co-hosting with the Royal Flying Doctor Service a day on “Barenya Station” south west of Hughenden. The RFDS does health checks while Jeanie arranges a pamper day along with fitness and stretching sessions for both adults and children. From Quota Carindale’s donations, Jeanie has enlisted the services of a Charters Towers fitness professional to travel to “Barenya Station” to provide physical health and well being tips and classes as those attending the day have no personal access to these services without first driving hundreds of kilometres.
Funds raised by Quota Carindale go directly to Jeanie who purchases her requirements from businesses within her area and in this way support is given to local communities as well as people on the land. Following are some photos of a similar day co-hosted by the Royal Flying Doctors Service and North QLD Rural held in September 2015.

So how can you help Quota Carindale?
Quota Carindale is one of the charity jars at Grilled Carindale this month! When you make a purchase you should receive a token, if you don't please ask for your token as sometimes they are quite busy and may forget. Place the token in the jar of your choice, (Quota Carindale please)there are usually three jars to choose from and the jar with the most tokens at the end of the month wins $300.
One of our ladies went in and was given a token, when she asked for extra tokens, they were happy to give them to her, it is worth the ask. So come on everyone, the food is good and the more we purchase during April the more tokens we get to put in our jar. Please pass this on to everyone you know, we all have to eat. Tasty fundraising!

The Unicorn Foundation
Our Craft and Gift Fair is not only about crafts and gifts, each year we hold this event to raise funds for our charities.
We were happy to be able to provide an opportunity for the Unicorn Foundation to be able to raise funds for their particular charity.
The Unicorn Foundation is the only Australian not-for-profit medical charity focused on neuroendocrine tumours (NET). Neuroendocrine tumours have, until recently, been overlooked by the medical community. Neuroendocrine tumours by nature are rare; manifest myriad clinical symptoms, many of which are non-specific, and are usually diagnosed late in their clinical course. Such behaviour has created a culture of misunderstanding and non-treatment by physicians. As a result, many patients have felt neglected and abandoned by a medical system that is only beginning to understand and grasp the complexities of the patient with neuroendocrine tumours.
Some of the organisations that received donations from this years Craft and Gift Fair were -
Asperger Services Australia, it is a volunteer not for profit organisation established in 1995, and provides support to parents, carers, families, individuals, service providers and professionals.
CleftPALS which stands for Cleft Palate and Lip Society. They are a national, voluntary group, comprising parents, relatives and professionals interested in the welfare of children born with cleft related conditions.
CleftPALS was started by two friends whose babies were born during the same week at the same hospital. They realised the support and guidance they gave each other should be available to all parents, particularly during the first year. They felt that parents who have the friendship and support of others who have experienced similar situations, can offer their children a parental relationship and a home environment free of the stress that might otherwise be present.
Their membership is in the majority from Queensland, but also from other states as well as overseas. The Queensland division of CleftPALS represents approximately 170 members.

The Magic Quilt
This Craft and Gift Fair offered so much for everyone, Katie Sokolic the author of the Magic Quilt was there promoting her magical book.
This is a children’s picture book about the magical adventures of Toby and the patchwork quilt his mum has made for him. Toby adores his quilt and loves playing with it in imaginative and fun ways but also loves to snuggle under it when he is upset or disappointed. It is during these sad times that he discovers just what his quilt can do.
Katie is also the creator of the quilts and coordinating décor products.

From Herbs to oils
Founder and Managing Director, Farina Murray of Arkliving, showed everyone how you could grow fresh herbs, on your boat or in your home
This new little business has recently sprung up providing solutions for our urban and mobile lifestyles and promoting an earth friendly lifestyle, to help us become a little more self sufficient and do what we could all use a little more of in our lives - gardening.
She sells herb garden planters for use in boats or on balconies.

What we had going OnStage
Our first On Stage presentation was a presentation by Dr Kathleen Berry she presented Fashion Design and Pattern Making. Whatever your body shape or
size, she showed us how you can create garments that make you look good and feel great.
This presentation was followed by a fashion parade showing the beautiful fashions by Sobidah. Not only did we see the fashions we were able to try them on and purchase them on the day. As it was coming up for Melbourne Cup they incorporated some cute little fascinators in the parade, which came from another stall holder Alison Clark.
Anyone looking for that special piece to top off their Melbourne Cup outfit? It was hard to go past these breathtaking hats from Alison Clark.
After lunch we said hello to Zena Kennedy and heard her presentation on Let's Start at the Very Beginning. What ever hobby that you have there are always the starting items that you will need. She shared with us the basics of card making and how to gather a starter kit together. It looks like you don't need everything after all. This was very informative.

Our mini Book Fest
The extra space in the building allowed us to have a Mini Book Fest in the Front Room. For the avid reader this was a great bonus, a Craft and Gift Fair to find some special Christmas gifts and then grab some books on the way out.
One lady was lucky enough to find a book she had been searching for since she was 14 years old. It was called Booran and she had read it at school and wanted her grandchildren to read it. She was delighted with her find. Maybe some of you found the book you had been searching for. We would love to hear. Leave us a comment at the bottom of the page.
Did you know, PCYC Carindale was built in 1998 as part of the redevelopment of the Woolloongabba Precinct which included an existing PCYC that was knocked down to make way for the now Gabba Cricket Grounds. Its catchment area covers a diverse population from south east Brisbane to the Gateway and beyond. The team of passionate and committed staff and volunteers work tirelessly to actively engage youth in structured activities and programs. Surplus income generated via club operations is reinvested into ongoing youth programs focused on leadership, self-esteem and crime prevention.
Proceeds from the Bookfest went to this organisation.

Looking back at our Craft and Gift Fair
The Craft and Gift Fair was even bigger this year as we have moved to a bigger venue. The new venue was the Carina PCYC. The entire building and the grounds was used for the Fair.
Inside the main hall there were the usual Craft stalls, full of gorgeous handmade products to purchase.
There was something for everyone, jewelry, craft products and kits, sewing materials, wood turned objects and ready made products. It was a great way to get the Christmas list filled.
Come back tomorrow and check out more of the highlights. Let us whet your appetite for 2016 Craft and Gift Fair
