Build a Bear party - a gift of cuddles and comfort

Remember when you were a child and had a very special friend? May have been a soft toy or a special blanket. A favourite activity of Quota Carindale is raising money to give a group of foster children a visit to build-a-bear for their own special friend. Janette Taylor had the great idea after visiting Build-a-bear with her own grandchildren. She asked around and was directed to Mercy Family Services. They have foster children placed all over Brisbane, and when we settle on a day, ten excited children come bouncing through the door accompanied by their foster parents. We have a pre-selected bear and the children can choose their colour, plus your donation allows for an item of clothing. Could be a pair of trousers, a tee shirt or a tutu.

A red satin heart is kissed, whispered to then sewn into the bear which the child has named. A special box is then provided to take home their new friend.

It's a very heart warming activity as you can imagine. We hear from the social worker that some little children still sleep with their bear 12 months later.

Often these children have to be taken from home in very frightening circumstances. Everything familiar is left behind.
A very special bear is cuddles and comfort.

Your donation of $25 for one bear (or $50 for two ) is a wonderful gift.

We want to do four parties this year. Would you like to help?

Please contact qicarindale@gmail.com one of our members will give you more details on how you can help.

Craft and Gift Fair

Every year  we the Quota International of Carindale  Club holds a Craft and Gift Fair
This year is going to be even bigger as they have moved to a bigger venue. The new venue is the Carina PCYC. The entire building and the grounds will be used for the Fair.

Inside the main hall...
There will be the usual Craft stalls, where you will be able to purchase handmade goods. There will be something for everyone, jewelry, craft products and kits, sewing materials, wood turned objects and ready made products. A great way to get the Christmas list filled.

Some of the exhibitors will be demonstrating their wares throughout the day at their stands. I for one love standing and watching creativity in action.

Also in the main hall you may be lucky enough to win one of the half hourly door prizes. If they are not claimed don't despair the lucky number gets put up on a board and you can claim it at any time throughout the day.

At the end of the day, you could be the lucky winner of a Sewing Machine. This is our door prize donated by River City Sewing. You must be there at the time of drawing.

On Stage...
11am - A fashion parade will be showing beautiful fashions by Sobidah . As it is coming up for Melbourne Cup you might find something for the big day.

 On Stage Presentations...
10am - In the Presentation area Dr Kathleen Berry will be presenting Fashion Design and Pattern Making in the presentation area. Whatever your body shape or size.  Create garments that make you look good and feel great.

12 noon- Also in the Presentation area you will be able to say hello to Zena Kennedy and hear her presentation on Let's Start at the Very Beginning. What ever hobby that you have there are always the starting items that you will need. She will share with you the basics of card making and how to gather a starter kit together.

2pm - The Final presentation for the day in the  Presentation area Dr Kathleen Berry will again be presenting Fashion Design and Pattern Making in the presentation area. Whatever your body shape or size.  Create garments that make you look good and feel great.

Update from the President of Quota International of Carindale

2014 has started off as a busy year for the Carindale Club. In January we held our first get together where we planned some of the events the club would be holding this year, either as fund raising events or social events. During this meeting a parcel we had been waiting on arrived, this was a Broadmaker Studio program which was being donated to a young autistic boy who was starting Prep in 2014, so we were pleased to be able to deliver this communication programme in time for his first day of school.
To start off February we held a sausage sizzle to raise more funds, also during this month members of Quota celebrated the 95th birthday of Quota International.

March saw a very successful Trivia Night at the Abruzzo Club, Carina, where funds raised are for the clubs in the Philippines for the disaster relief program.

Update on the Philippines

Below is an email sent to all Quota members on what is happening to assist in the Philippines. Please check back often to see how you can help.

Dear Members,

First and foremost we are thankful that Quotarians are safe in Cebu Province, Iloilo, Negros Oriental/Dumaguete, Legazpi/Albay, and Metro Manila.  So many of our members world-wide have asked how they can help.

Beris Pritchard, our South Pacific Area Liaison, has been in communication with Governor Connie Garcia, Lt Governor Bernadette Galang, and Past Governor Emilie Simon from District 41.  Their club members are actively reaching out to help in any way they can.

As you can imagine, there are many details involved in providing assistance during a monumental disaster and these details take time to sort out.  Although we all would like to respond immediately in times like these, please be assured that Quota’s caring will be needed for a long time as they rebuild their lives and communities.  The International Board of Directors is in the process of putting a long term Disaster Policy in place.  In the interim time, both the Board and Staff are working through the process of how best to assist those in the Philippines.  Clubs will be advised shortly on ways to offer support.  Please know that we are working as quickly as we can to provide additional updates on how you might assist.

Sincerely,
Quota International Board of Directors and Staff
